Greenhead Park

The woodland paths at Greenhead Park wind through proper Yorkshire countryside just outside Elland, offering a genuine escape without the tourist crowds. You're walking through mixed woodland where the light filters through in shafts, birdsong does most of the talking, and the only sounds are your boots on the path. It's the sort of place where you notice things - moss on north-facing oak trunks, a heron fishing in the stream if you're patient, the way the ground changes from clay to gravel as you go deeper in.

This is a nature reserve, so it appeals most to anyone who actually likes walking and wildlife spotting rather than ticking boxes. If your kids are still at the age where they'll crouch down to watch insects, they'll get hours out of it. For walkers based at Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park or Holme Valley, it's a natural circuit walk - accessible enough for a morning outing but with enough distance if you want to make a proper morning of it. The terrain's manageable for families, though it can be muddy after rain.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is precisely the point. Allow an hour for a gentle walk, two if you're taking time to actually observe things. Spring brings migrating birds; autumn offers changing colours. It's free to access and costs nothing to appreciate - the sort of Yorkshire green space that reminds you why people stay put here.
