The converted barn space in Wadhurst that houses Greenfinch is a proper surprise if you're exploring the Kent-Sussex border. It's a contemporary gallery showing work from emerging artists - the kind of place where the work actually changes, so you're not looking at the same collection twice. On my visit, the curation felt genuine rather than scattered, and the white walls and natural light made even modest pieces feel considered.

You'll get the most from it if you're the type who reads gallery notes and actually wants to chat with whoever's manning the desk. It's not a massive operation - you can work through it in forty minutes, maybe an hour if there's something that properly grabs you. The real draw is that it punches above its weight for a small regional venue. Work here ranges from painting and sculpture to installations, and there's usually a print section worth lingering over.

Free entry, thankfully. It's worth factoring in if you're camping at Hopgarden Glamping or Glassenbury - both are within five miles - and gives you something decent to do on a damp afternoon. Pair it with a walk around Wadhurst itself, or time your visit around whatever exhibition they've got on. Check ahead though, as opening hours aren't always fixed. The gallery closes between shows, so ringing ahead beats turning up to a shut door.
