Green Wood

Green Wood is a proper forest walk just outside Witney, the sort of place that rewards you for leaving the car behind. You get woodland paths threading through mature trees, decent shade if you visit in summer, and enough space to actually feel like you've left town despite being minutes away. The paths are manageable for families with school-age kids, though younger ones might find it a bit much if they're not used to walking. It's free to access and you can spend anywhere from an hour to two and a half hours depending on how thoroughly you want to explore. Come midweek if you can - weekends bring pushchair parents and dog walkers, which rather fills up the narrow bits. Spring's lovely for bluebells, though autumn gets the atmosphere right when the light turns amber through the canopy. For a camping holiday based at one of the nearby parks - Cotswold Edge is closest at just over four miles - Green Wood makes a solid morning outing before heading to Witney town centre for lunch. It's the kind of place that does exactly what it says on the tin: it's a wood, it's walkable, and it costs nothing. Not spectacular, but genuinely useful for stretching legs between caravan days. Pack a map though - phone signal's patchy and some junctions aren't signposted brilliantly.
