Green Tor

The walk up Green Tor rewards you with proper views across Dartmoor once you've earned them. It's not the flashiest peak on the moor - you won't find tourist crowds or facilities - but that's rather the point. The tor itself is a granite outcrop surrounded by moorland that shifts colour with the seasons, and from the top you can see right across to the distant hills.

This is a solid walk for people who like their countryside without the circus. Families with reasonably fit legs will manage it fine, though younger children might find the moorland a bit exposed and featureless. Walkers after some genuine solitude come here and find it. The rocky scramble at the top isn't technical - nothing that should trouble anyone with decent boots - but it's enough to make you feel you've actually climbed something.

Allow two to three hours for a circular walk from Okehampton way. Conditions underfoot vary wildly depending on recent weather; after rain it can be boggy in patches. There's no visitor centre, no car park with a café, no admission fee because there's nothing to charge for. You just turn up and walk. That authenticity matters.
