Green Spinney

The woodland around Green Spinney is proper dense - the sort of place where you lose mobile signal after fifty metres and suddenly remember what quiet actually sounds like. It's a working forest rather than a manicured tourist attraction, which means you get actual nature instead of interpretive boards and gift shops.

Walking through here feels purposeful. The paths are well-trodden but not overcrowded, and the canopy is thick enough that even on hot days you'll find relief from the sun. It's the kind of spot where you might see a buzzard or hear woodpeckers if you're lucky and keep your noise down. Families with kids old enough to walk a decent distance will get more from it than toddlers - there's no playground, no facilities, just trees.

The nearest proper town is Oakham, about four miles away, which gives you a sense of scale. If you're camping at Emily's Cut nearby, Green Spinney works as a morning ramble before breakfast, though don't expect to spend more than ninety minutes here unless you're serious about spotting wildlife. Free to access, no gates, just pull over and head in when you spot the entrance.

It's honest woodland - not Instagram-ready, not particularly dramatic, but exactly what it says it is. Worth a walk if you're in the area, though don't plan a day trip around it alone.
