Green Hill

The walk up Green Hill from Maybole takes about forty minutes if you're moderately fit, and the views across South Ayrshire repay the effort. It's nothing dramatic - we're talking Scottish Lowlands here, not Ben Nevis territory - but there's something genuinely satisfying about reaching the top and spotting Culzean Castle off to the west. The hill itself is open moorland with decent paths, the sort of place where you can actually breathe without worrying about scrambling or technical bits.

This is proper walking country rather than a tourist trap. Families with kids aged eight or over will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the trudge tedious. Green Hill works brilliantly as part of a wider Ayrshire walking holiday, especially if you're staying at Freedom Fields Glamping just down the road. You could easily tie it in with exploring Maybole's town centre or making a longer expedition to the coast. It's the kind of place locals know and use regularly, which means it feels authentic rather than packaged for tourists. Go on a weekday if you can and you'll likely have the moorland to yourself. Bring decent boots - it gets boggy after rain.
