Green Crag

Green Crag rises just inland from Holmrook, a straightforward fell that doesn't demand mountaineering skills but rewards you with proper views once you're up. The walk itself is steady rather than brutal - most people manage it in under two hours if they're reasonably fit. You're looking at Lake District fells without the crowds you'd get on Helvellyn or Scafell Pike, which is no bad thing on a summer weekend.

The summit gives you sight lines across the western fells and down towards the coast. On a clear day you can trace the Irish Sea from up there. It's the sort of walk that works brilliantly for families with older kids who aren't quite ready for the bigger peaks, or for anyone wanting a morning's exercise without committing the whole day. An hour at the top to rest and eat a sandwich feels right.

Fisherground Campsite sits just a few miles away and makes a natural base - you could knock this out before breakfast and spend the afternoon elsewhere, or use it as a warm-up walk if you're building up to something more demanding. There's no visitor centre or facilities on the fell itself, so bring water. The approach from Holmrook is straightforward enough, though parking is limited - arrive early if you're visiting on a weekend.
