Great Worm Crag

The walk up Great Worm Crag rewards you with proper fell-walking without the crowds you'd get on Scafell Pike. From Holmrook, it's a decent climb - nothing brutal, but you'll feel it in your legs. The summit sits at just over 500 metres, giving you unobstructed views across the Lake District fells and down towards the Cumbrian coast. On a clear day, you can see right across to the Irish Sea.

The rock formations near the top are the real draw here. There's something about scrambling over weathered stone that makes you feel like you've actually earned the view, rather than just walked up a path. Families with older kids will manage it fine; the scramble isn't technical, just a bit loose underfoot in places. Younger children might find the final push hard going.

Allow a good three hours from the car park and back - longer if you're not a regular fell-walker. Go early on weekends if you can. The weather up there changes fast, so check the forecast and bring a waterproof even if it looks fine in Holmrook.

Fisherground Campsite is only a few miles away, making this perfect as a morning or afternoon venture during a Lake District park holiday. It's one of those walks that doesn't demand a full day commitment but still gives you the sense you've done something properly outdoorsy.
