Great Treffgarne Mountain

The walk up Great Treffgarne Mountain rewards you with views across Pembrokeshire that justify the climb, even if the summit itself is modest by most standards. It's not high - around 370 metres - but what it lacks in dramatic elevation it makes up for in the sweep of countryside falling away in all directions. On a clear day you can see across to the Preseli Hills, which is worth the effort alone.

The ascent from Haverfordwest side takes a decent hour, and the path can be muddy in patches, especially after rain. It's popular with walkers doing the Pembrokeshire loops, and rightly so - it's accessible enough for families with older kids but gives you a genuine sense of achievement without requiring serious scrambling. The summit has an old cairn and a trig point, the kind of proper hill-walking payoff that makes people come back.

Timing-wise, go early if you can. The car parks fill up during school holidays, and the light in late afternoon turns everything golden across the valleys. Free to access, of course - it's open country. Allow two to three hours if you're not particularly fast, or ninety minutes if you know what you're doing.

Staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Brandy Brook, Three Fields, or Nolton Cross - gives you the perfect base for tackling this alongside other Pembrokeshire walks. It's the kind of hill that slots perfectly into a week's holiday without dominating it, proper bread-and-butter walking territory.
