Dirty Pool Wood

Thick woodland canopy blocks out most daylight even on bright summer afternoons at this proper Welsh forest just outside Haverfordwest. Dirty Pool Wood lives up to its intriguing name with a dark, muddy pond at its heart - though don't expect crystal clear waters for a paddle.

Winding footpaths snake through dense stands of oak and ash, creating a woodland walk that feels genuinely wild rather than manicured. The going can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Children will love the sense of adventure, though keep little ones close as the paths aren't always clearly marked.

Bird watchers do well here, particularly in early morning when woodpeckers and nuthatches are most active. The forest floor comes alive with bluebells in late spring, making it well worth the detour from nearby Newgale Coast Holiday Park or Broad Haven Holiday Park.

Allow a good hour for a proper explore, though you could easily spend longer if you're not in a rush. The wood feels refreshingly uncommercial - no visitor centre or car park fees to worry about. Just park considerately along the lane and head in. It's a cracking spot for families staying at any of the holiday parks around Newgale or Broad Haven who fancy a break from beach time.
