Great Kneeset

The walk up Great Kneeset isn't long, but it's steep enough to earn the views. You're looking at moorland that rolls toward Okehampton, with Dartmoor National Park sprawling out below - proper uplifting stuff if the weather's on your side. The peak itself isn't dramatic; it's a bare tor with rocks scattered about, but that's rather the point. You get genuine isolation without needing a full day's expedition.

This works best for walkers who want something quicker than the bigger Dartmoor peaks but still want to feel like they've achieved something. Families with older kids will manage it fine - the sort of place where children stop complaining halfway up and actually notice the view. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace and how long you dawdle at the top.

Nearest base is Okehampton, where you can stock up on supplies before heading out. Lydford Caravan & Camping Park sits about five miles away and makes a solid spot if you're doing a park holiday - easy drive to here and plenty of other Dartmoor walks within reach. Go midweek if you can. Weekends attract enough people to make the moorland feel less remote, and frankly it's the isolation that makes this worth the leg work.
