Great Hayclose Coppice

The woodland around Great Hayclose Coppice near Newent is proper walking territory - the kind of place where you can lose an afternoon without trying. It's mixed deciduous forest, dense enough to feel like genuine countryside but accessible enough that you won't need proper hiking boots. The paths wind through old coppiced woodland, which means younger trees have regrown from felled stumps, creating a layered canopy that changes throughout the seasons.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself - no visitor centre, no café, no facilities that I'm aware of - but rather a cracking spot to string together a couple of hours of quiet forest walking. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first mile or so, though spotting wildlife keeps some engaged. Spring brings bluebells, autumn the usual leaf colour if you're lucky.

There's no entrance fee. Just turn up and walk. Allow two to three hours for a proper loop, or scale it back if you're popping in between other activities.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks within five miles - Up Sticks Glamping and Swallowfields Retreat are closest - this makes an easy morning or afternoon option. It's the sort of place you'd fit in alongside visits to the Forest of Dean proper, which is a short drive north. Not dramatic, not Instagram-worthy, but genuinely pleasant if you want woodland without the crowds.
