Great Green Hows

The walk up Great Green Hows takes you from the flatlands around Ulverston into proper fell country, and it's exactly the sort of unassuming summit that delivers more than its modest height suggests. No facilities up there, so bring water and something to eat. Spring and autumn are your best bets; winter can turn it into a slog, and summer midges might have other ideas.

Stay at Hill of Oaks or Park Cliffe and you're within striking distance. Both put you close enough to tackle Great Green Hows as a half-day mission before exploring the wider Lake District. It pairs well with gentler walks around Windermere if someone in your party isn't feeling the fell that day.
