Great Crwys

The walk up Great Crwys isn't long, but it's steep enough to remind you why you skipped the second breakfast. This Herefordshire peak sits proud above the surrounding farmland, offering views that stretch properly far on a clear day - you can pick out the Malvern Hills and the Black Mountains if you've got good light.

It's not a major scramble. Most walkers will find the ascent manageable in under an hour from the car park, though the final push tests your legs a bit. The view from the top pays for it though. On a decent day, the whole sweep of the Welsh border opens up, which is worth the huff and puff.

Families with reasonably confident walkers will enjoy this one. Younger kids might find it a slog, but there's genuine satisfaction at the top - not just another trig point, but real distance views. History types won't find much here, but the landscape tells its own story about hill farming and border country.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing. Summer's best, though autumn colours make it worth coming back in September or October. The wind can be fierce up there even when it's calm below, so bring a layer.

If you're camping at Trippenkennett Farm - a solid spot about five miles away - this makes a cracking morning outing before the site gets busy. Combines nicely with a wander around the lower Wye Valley afterwards.
