The station building is authentic Victorian, and there's usually someone pottering about the workshop areas who'll chat your ear off about valve gear and boiler pressure - the sort of conversation that'll either fascinate you or send you to the cafe for tea.

Families with children who've moved beyond Thomas the Tank Engine territory will get genuine value here. Older kids especially appreciate seeing how these machines actually work. It's not a passive attraction - you're watching real restoration and maintenance happen. Allow two to three hours to do it properly, longer if you're booking a train ride.

As a base for a park holiday near Barrow upon Soar, it works well for a half-day outing. Bradgate Park is only a few miles away for walks, and there's decent camping nearby at Proctors Park and High Meadows Farm. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends, though running days vary seasonally - check ahead before visiting. Entry is reasonable value for what you get, and there's a working cafe on site.
