Grandtully Hill

The walk up Grandtully Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Tummel Valley and over toward Pitlochry. It's not a massive undertaking - most people will manage the ascent in under an hour if they're reasonably fit - but it demands proper respect in wet weather when the paths turn into small streams.

You get moorland, scattered woodland, and wide-open vistas that work equally well on a crisp October afternoon or a spring morning when the light's sharp enough to pick out distant peaks. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no trig point or dramatic crag - just a high point where the ground opens up. That's rather good, actually. No false promises, no crowds queuing for the photo.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with older kids can manage it without complaint, though younger legs might find the steady gradient a bit wearing. On a decent day, budget 90 minutes for the round trip if you include a breather at the top.

Pitch your tent at Grandtully Station Campsite just 3.4 miles away - proper facilities and genuinely friendly staff - or push slightly further to Pitlochry where there's more choice. The hill makes sense as a morning walk before exploring the town's shops and riverside walks. Pitilie Pods, 2.1 miles out, is brilliant if you want something a touch posher with actual roofs overhead.
