Grand Union Canal

The Grand Union Canal runs through Buckinghamshire like a long, calm artery - and honestly, it's one of those places that rewards you for slowing down. Near Leighton Buzzard, you can walk or cycle the towpath for miles, watching narrowboats potter past and wildlife that's surprisingly varied for a manmade waterway. Kingfishers flash along the banks if you're lucky and patient. Water voles hide in the reeds, herons stand statue-still at the edges.

This works best for families after a proper walk - not a quick twenty-minute visit. Bring bikes and you've got real flexibility; park at one end, ride a few miles, have lunch, come back. The towpath is flat and wide, so kids from about four upwards can manage it without complaint. Older children do better when they're actually spotting wildlife rather than trudging aimlessly, so go early when things are quieter.

It's free, obviously - it's a public right of way - and there's no entrance fee or time restrictions. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're doing a proper outing. Spring and autumn beat summer when it gets rammed with boat traffic and loses some appeal.

The canal sits perfectly between Hill Farm and Orchard (2.5 miles away) and Wingbury Farm Glamping (3.4 miles), both top-rated spots for a holiday base in the area. You could easily combine a morning canal walk with an afternoon at one of the Chiltern parks nearby. It's not dramatic or show-offy, but it's genuinely peaceful.
