The walk up Graig-Wen from near Wrexham is proper rewarding - nothing fancy, just a straightforward trudge to decent views across the Welsh border country. You're looking at roughly 400 metres of height gain, so it's not a massive undertaking, but the path can be boggy in places and the wind catches you on the exposed bits.

What you get at the top makes it worthwhile. Clear days hand you sweeping vistas over Shropshire and into Wales - on a good afternoon you can see for miles. It's the sort of view that reminds you why people bother walking uphill for no reason other than standing at the top.

This is walkers' territory, really. Kids might find it a slog unless they're the outdoor type, but teenagers who don't mind a bit of effort will appreciate the payoff. Families based at Foxtail Holiday Park, just a few miles away, could easily slot this into a day that includes easier woodland walks - it's not your only option in the area, which takes some pressure off.

Timing-wise, you'll want two to three hours round trip depending on fitness. Go early or late in the day to avoid crowds - though honestly, Graig-Wen never feels rammed. Spring and autumn are your best bets weather-wise; summers can feel muggy in the valleys, and winter rain makes those boggy sections genuinely testing.
