Old Oswestry Hill Fort

The ramparts of Old Oswestry Hill Fort rise up from the Shropshire landscape like something from a half-remembered history lesson - except you're actually standing on them. This Iron Age fort sits just north of Oswestry town, and it's genuinely impressive once you're up there, with multiple defensive ditches still visible after two millennia. The views across the borderlands toward Wales are worth the climb alone.

It's a proper workout getting to the top, but the fort itself is free to access and you can wander the ramparts at your own pace. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're the type to sit and contemplate ancient Britons resisting Romans. History enthusiasts will find plenty to mull over, and families with kids old enough to manage a steep walk will enjoy the scramble and the sense of discovery. On a clear day you can see for miles.

If you're based at Fairhaven Camping and Glamping or Sweeney Farm Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent half-day outing before heading back for a proper pub dinner. Foxtail Holiday Park is also within easy reach. The site can get muddy after rain - decent boots are wise - and there's minimal interpretation on the ground, so reading up beforehand helps. Go early morning in summer to beat both crowds and the heat. It's not flashy or visitor-friendly in the modern sense, but that's rather the point.
