Graig-hir

Getting to the top of Graig-hir is a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll, but the effort pays off once you're standing on this peak looking out across Conwy Valley. It's a straightforward ascent from the Betws-y-Coed area, and you're basically climbing open moorland with increasingly good views the higher you go. On a clear day you can see all the way across to the Snowdonia peaks - it's the sort of vista that makes you understand why people move to North Wales.

This one's for walkers who like a bit of graft. It's not a technical climb, just a sustained pull uphill, so it suits anyone with reasonable fitness and proper boots. Kids will either love the challenge or complain for the entire descent, depending on their temperament. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip, though faster walkers will crack it in under two.

The beauty of staying near Betws-y-Coed for this is you've got proper options afterwards. Snowdonia Glamping Holidays and Porth Eryri Glamping are both within a few miles, so you can tackle Graig-hir in the morning, then collapse into something comfortable with a decent view. Neither is exactly budget accommodation, but if you're splashing out on a glamping experience anyway, you might as well make a day of a proper mountain.

Free to access, no facilities on or near the peak, so bring water and snacks. Go early if possible - the moorland can feel exposed in poor weather, and afternoon cloud rolls in quickly.
