The walk up Grafia is one of those proper Welsh hill climbs that rewards you far more than the map suggests it will. Starting from the lanes near Llanidloes, you're looking at a decent pull uphill through moorland and rough grassland, but once you crest the summit you get views that stretch across the Cambrian Mountains in ways the lower valleys simply don't offer.

It's not a technical scramble or anything - more of a straightforward walker's peak, which means families with older kids can manage it without drama, though the ground underfoot can be boggy after rain. The whole thing takes a couple of hours at a gentle pace. There's genuine isolation up here, which appeals to anyone wanting to escape the honeypot routes, though the views themselves are more about wide moorland sweeps than dramatic rock formations.

Best visited in decent weather - when mist rolls in, the appeal drops considerably since there's no shelter and the landscape becomes featureless. Summer months are most reliable. The nearest decent base is Glangwy Farm Camping, about six miles away, which is well-regarded for accessing this part of Mid Wales.

Grafia works well as part of a broader exploration of the Llanidloes hills rather than a standalone destination. If you're in the area exploring the moorlands and want a straightforward half-day walk with proper views, it's worth the effort. Just don't expect anything spectacular - it's the sense of solitude and the gentle achievement that makes it worthwhile.
