Gowk Bank National Nature Reserve

The walk up Gowk Bank catches you properly off guard. You're clambering through moorland just outside Haltwhistle, thinking it'll be a gentle potter, and suddenly you're standing above proper Northumberland - the Tyne Valley spreads out below you like someone's rolled out a green blanket and forgotten to smooth it flat.

It's a nature reserve, so you're there for the walking and the wildlife spotting rather than facilities or fancy attractions. The reserve itself manages grassland and moorland, and what matters is the landscape. On a clear day the views stretch for miles. On a grey day - which let's be honest is most days round here - it's moody and dramatic in that way only northern moorland does properly.

Historically minded walkers will get most from this place. You're literally standing on ground that touches Hadrian's Wall's empire, though the Wall itself isn't visible from here. The real pull is the walking itself - it's not a five-minute stroll, so bring decent boots and allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly. Families with younger kids might find the slog a bit much, but teenagers who aren't completely phone-zombified will enjoy it.

Based near either Hadrian's Wall Campsite or Herding Hill Farm, you could easily slot this into a longer moorland walk day. It works well as a lunchtime stopper or a proper afternoon expedition. Free, naturally, being a nature reserve. No gift shop, no café - just you, the wind, and the view.
