The walk up Goukthorn Hill takes about forty minutes from Castle Douglas and rewards you with proper views across Dumfries and Galloway. It's not a slog - the path is well-trodden and manageable, though the final stretch gets a bit steep. Worth it though. On a clear day you can see right across the Lowlands, and the surrounding moorland feels genuinely quiet, even in summer.
