Gosforth Cross

You'll find this tenth-century Viking cross standing in the churchyard at Gosforth, just outside Holmrook in west Cumbria. It's a proper substantial thing - about four metres tall, carved from red sandstone with intricate Norse patterns covering every surface. The detail is remarkable: you can make out dragons, bears, and Christian imagery all tangled together, which tells you exactly how the Vikings were transitioning to Christianity when this was carved.

What makes it genuinely interesting is the design itself. Unlike crosses you'll see elsewhere, this one has a ring around the intersection, and the whole thing is basically a sculpture lesson in how two cultures were merging. You're looking at pagan Norse mythology sat right alongside Christian symbolism. The craftsmanship is sharp even now, after a thousand years of Cumbrian weather battering it.

It's completely free to visit and accessible any time you fancy - you just walk into the churchyard. You won't need more than twenty minutes to properly examine it, though if you're genuinely interested in Viking history, you could spend longer photographing the details. Families with older kids will get something out of it, but younger ones might find it a bit static.
