Goose House Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Goose House Wood sits just outside Preston and offers exactly what you'd want from a Lancashire forest - quiet trails, decent tree cover, and the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The woodland is straightforward enough: paths wind through mixed woodland with nothing particularly spectacular about the trees themselves, but that's rather the point. You come here to walk, not gawk.

It works best for families with reasonably confident walkers and anyone after a couple of hours away from the city. The paths are manageable rather than challenging, and there's space to let kids run about without worrying too much. If you're after a proper forest experience or dramatic scenery, you'll be disappointed - this is more about getting some air and a bit of green. Bring a map or know what you're doing, as signage isn't brilliant.

Free to access, naturally, and you can fit it around a longer day exploring the area. Nearby holiday parks like Beacon Fell View and Wigwam Holidays' sites are within striking distance if you're basing yourself for a caravan holiday. The wood itself works as a decent half-day addition rather than a reason to drive out specially from Preston. Pair it with a proper walk somewhere with more structure - the Forest of Bowland is genuinely worth the extra drive north if you want something with more bite to it.
