Golden Hill Fort Country Park

The walk up to Golden Hill Fort takes you through proper woodland before you hit the open grassland where the Victorian fortification sits. It's a modest climb from Freshwater, nothing that'll wreck you, but it rewards with views across the Solent towards the mainland. The fort itself is small - you're not talking Hampton Court here - but there's something rather appealing about wandering round a 19th-century defensive structure that's now just part of the landscape. The real draw is the country park itself. You get woodland paths, open meadows, and enough space to let dogs and kids run about without feeling hemmed in.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a sprawling all-day affair - allow two hours maximum if you're taking it easy - but it's the sort of place where you can build a proper route depending on what you fancy. Families with younger children might find the fort itself underwhelming after twenty minutes, though the open ground is decent for a picnic and a kick-about. History enthusiasts will appreciate the fort, though don't expect much interpretation on site.

If you're camping at Heathfield Farm or Glamping The Wight Way - both literally next door - this is an obvious morning outing. Even from the slightly further parks like Tapnell Farm or Tom's Eco Lodge, it's worth slotting in. Combine it with the coastal path towards Colwell Bay and you've got a proper half-day. Winter's actually when it's best - fewer people, better views without the heat haze.
