West Wight Heritage Centre

Three cottages house this proper local history museum that tells the story of western Isle of Wight from prehistoric times to the present day. You'll find everything from Roman coins dug up in nearby fields to Victorian photographs of Freshwater when it was just a farming village, plus displays on the area's military heritage and maritime connections.

Families with children who actually read museum labels will get the most from this place - there's enough variety to keep curious minds engaged for an hour or so. The agricultural displays are particularly good, showing how farming shaped this corner of the island. Local characters get their due too, including plenty about Tennyson's time at nearby Farringford.

It's run entirely by volunteers, which gives it that authentic community feel you don't get in the bigger attractions. The staff know their stuff and are happy to chat about local history if you're genuinely interested. Don't expect high-tech interactive displays - this is old-school museum territory with glass cases and handwritten labels.

Location-wise, you're perfectly placed if you're staying at any of the nearby holiday parks around Freshwater. Heathfield Farm Camping Park and The Bay Colwell are both within walking distance, making this an easy rainy-day option. Worth combining with a trip to the Tennyson Monument or Alum Bay for a proper West Wight day out.
