Golden Hill Fort

Victorian paranoia meets surprisingly good sandwiches at this clifftop fortress overlooking the Solent. Built in the 1860s to ward off French invasion that never came, Golden Hill Fort now serves a rather more peaceful purpose as one of the Isle of Wight's better picnic spots.

Families will find plenty of space to spread out on the grassy ramparts, with dramatic views across to the mainland that'll keep the adults happy while kids explore the old gun emplacements. The fort itself is largely ruined but atmospheric enough, and there's something rather satisfying about munching your way through a packed lunch where Victorian soldiers once stood guard.

Walkers tackling the coastal path often stop here for a breather - it's well positioned between Freshwater and the western beaches. The views alone justify the visit, taking in the Needles to the west and Portsmouth's sprawl to the north.

Access is straightforward enough, though the final approach involves a short uphill walk that might test those laden with cool boxes. No facilities here, so bring everything you need including something to drink.
