Golconde by René Magritte

You'll spot this one on a bollard in Winchester city centre - a cast bronze replica of René Magritte's Golconde, the Belgian surrealist's famous painting of men in bowler hats raining down from the sky. It's genuinely arresting. The sculpture sits at ground level, so you're confronted with these falling figures in an almost comedic, slightly unsettling way that somehow works better in three dimensions than it does on canvas.

This isn't a gallery in the traditional sense - it's part of Winchester's public art trail, free to view and accessible whenever you're wandering through town. You can spend thirty seconds taking a photo or five minutes actually looking at how the artist has translated the painting's surreal humour into bronze.
