Gogarth Bishops Palace

Stone foundations scattered across a coastal headland mark what remains of this medieval bishop's residence, perched dramatically above the Irish Sea near Llandudno. The ruins aren't much to look at - just low walls and the odd doorway arch - but the setting is properly spectacular.

History buffs will appreciate the significance of this 13th-century palace, built by the bishops of Bangor as their coastal retreat. Most visitors, though, come for the clifftop walk and the cracking views across to Anglesey. On a clear day you can see the Menai Strait stretching into the distance.

Families with older children who enjoy a decent hike will get the most from this spot. The path from the Great Orme can be steep in places, and there's precious little shelter if the weather turns. Allow a good hour to explore properly, including time to catch your breath and take in the scenery.

What makes this worthwhile is combining it with a broader exploration of the Great Orme headland. The archaeological remains themselves won't detain you long, but as part of a coastal walk it's well worth the effort.
