Swinging through the canopy at Go Ape Thetford is genuinely exhilarating - if you can handle the height. This is proper adventure stuff: rope courses, Tarzan swings, zip lines threading between ancient pines. You're 40 feet up, clipped to a harness, moving through the forest at pace. It's not a gentle stroll.

The course takes two to three hours depending on your nerve and fitness. There are multiple difficulty levels, so you're not forced into the terrifying bits if you'd rather stick to medium-height platforms. Kids aged eight and up usually crack it fine, though teenagers seem to have the most fun - this is exactly the kind of thing they'll actually get excited about.

It's paid admission, and you'll want to book ahead during school holidays. The site sits in Thetford Forest, East Anglia's biggest woodland, so the setting itself is rather lovely - towering trees, proper forest air, nothing manicured about it.

If you're basing yourself at Willow Grove Farm Glamping nearby (about five and a half miles away), Go Ape works brilliantly as a day excursion. It's the sort of activity that burns off excess energy before heading back for supper. Bury Saint Edmunds is close by if you want to pair it with market town exploring, though honestly once you're done here you'll probably just want cake and a sit-down.
