Gloucester Lock

The lock sits right where the Gloucester Docks meet the Severn, a proper working piece of Victorian engineering that's been controlling water levels since 1829. You can watch narrowboats squeeze through - there's something oddly mesmerising about seeing a 57-foot vessel manoeuvre into those tight gates, especially when the lock keeper's doing it all manually.

It's free to wander about and watch, though there's no formal visitor centre or anything grand. Allow 20 minutes to half an hour if you're just observing; longer if you're the sort who enjoys understanding how the mechanisms actually work. The best time is mid-morning or early afternoon when commercial traffic is busiest - you might catch nothing at 6pm on a Tuesday.

Historically minded types will appreciate it more than young kids, though children often find the water level drop dramatic enough to hold their attention for a bit. The docks area around Gloucester itself has been properly regenerated in recent years, so you can combine this with a walk along the waterfront, grab lunch at one of the cafes, and actually have a decent afternoon out.

If you're staying at The Glamping Orchard just over 5 miles away - which genuinely looks brilliant - this makes an easy 15-minute drive for a morning visit before heading elsewhere. Red Lion Inn and Gables Farm are similarly close. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of exploring Gloucester's industrial heritage, it's well worth 30 minutes of your time.
