Gloucester City Wall

Walking Gloucester's city wall is like threading through layers of time without needing a history degree. Built in the 2nd century by the Romans, then rebuilt and reinforced over medieval times, this wall still stands in chunks around the city centre - weathered stone that's actually walked by thousands every year without much fanfare.

You can follow stretches of it on foot, particularly around the cathedral and near the Eastgate. The wall itself is the thing - substantial, clearly Roman-built in places, with later medieval repairs obvious if you know where to look. The views from the top sections across Gloucester aren't dramatic, but they're honest. You're not paying anything, just turning up and having a wander.

Historically minded visitors will get the most here, particularly those who enjoy tracing how a place changes across centuries. Roman history enthusiasts should definitely make time for it. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking what's for lunch, but walkers combining it with the cathedral and the docks nearby can build a decent afternoon out of it.
