Glenside Reservoir

Water stretches out under big Ayrshire skies at Glenside Reservoir, a proper working water supply that's somehow become one of South Ayrshire's better walking spots. You won't find crowds here - it's the sort of place locals know and tourists miss, which is rather the point.

The reservoir itself is fairly substantial, and the walk around it gives you genuine countryside feel without needing to trek for hours. The water's dark and reflective on grey days, which sounds dreary but actually looks tremendous in photographs. On clearer days you get views that stretch toward the Lowland hills, nothing dramatic but solid and real.

This works best for walkers who aren't after a destination so much as a decent loop and some breathing space. Kids will manage it fine if they're reasonably mobile - nothing technical, just firm ground and fresh air. The whole circuit takes a couple of hours at a normal pace, depending which route you take.

There's no café or visitor centre here, so bring what you need. Access appears unrestricted, though it's always worth checking locally in Ayr before you head out, as water company rules can shift. Early morning is genuinely lovely - fewer people, better light, more chance of spotting wildlife.
