Glenridding Dodd

The walk up Glenridding Dodd takes about an hour from the village itself, and it's properly steep in places - nothing technical, but your legs will know about it. The reward is a fell top with views across the Helvellyn range and down to Ullswater, which genuinely takes your breath away once you've stopped wheezing. On a clear day you can see right across to the Pennines.

It's the sort of peak that rewards walkers without requiring crampons or mountain rescue on speed dial. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient. The path is clear enough, though it can be boggy after rain - proper Lake District weather can turn this into a slog. Allow three hours for the round trip if you're not particularly quick, and maybe grab a flask before you leave Penrith.

Glenridding village itself is the obvious starting point, just below Ullswater. If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Sykeside or Crossgate are closest - you're perfectly positioned for an early start. The fell doesn't get properly crowded until late morning, so an 8am departure means you'll have the summit mostly to yourself.

Worth doing? Absolutely, if you like proper fell walking without the commitment of something like Helvellyn. It's a genuine mountain, not a hillfort pretending to be one. The view alone justifies the sweat.
