Glendowran Hill

The walk up Glendowran Hill from Biggar isn't technically demanding, but it's steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the view from the top. The summit sits at 578 metres, offering proper panoramic views across the Scottish Lowlands - on a clear day you can see a fair distance over farmland and moorland rolling away in all directions.

It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort without requiring serious hill-walking kit. The path itself is well-trodden, and most fit walkers can knock it out in a couple of hours return. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might grumble on the steeper bits.

The real appeal here is solitude. You won't be fighting crowds for the view. The landscape feels genuinely remote despite being close to Biggar, and on a quiet day you could easily have the hill to yourself. The moorland vegetation changes with the seasons - green and boggy in summer, russet and sparse come autumn.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just a few miles away, this makes an excellent half-day outing. It's the kind of walk that gives you real space to think, and the local views are handsome without being dramatic. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth including if you're spending time in the area. Bring decent boots - the ground can be boggy after rain.
