Glencoe Orbital Walk

The circuit around Glencoe is one of those walks that properly justifies the drive to the Highlands. You're essentially doing a loop that gives you the full drama of the valley - those famous three sisters on one side, the mountain wall closing in around you, and views that shift with every hundred metres of elevation gain.

It's not a gentle stroll. The path climbs steadily and you'll feel your legs working, especially in the upper reaches where the terrain gets rougher. Most people allow three to four hours depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath (or just stare at the scenery). The walk works year-round, though winter snow can make the higher sections tricky - go in spring or autumn for the best of it without the crowds.

This is brilliant for serious walkers and photographers. Families with young kids will struggle unless they're already used to mountain terrain. The views reward effort though - that's the whole point of Glencoe.

Both Invercoe Caravan & Motorhome Park and Red Squirrel Campsite are within spitting distance, making it dead easy to base yourself near Ballachulish and do the walk fresh in the morning. Invercoe is particularly well-placed, less than half a mile away, so you're not wasting energy on a long drive after a demanding hike.

Free to access. Start early to avoid the midday rush, especially in summer. Bring proper kit - the weather changes fast up there.
