Glencharnoch Wood

Walking into Glencharnoch Wood near Aviemore feels like stepping into a different Scotland altogether. The trees tower overhead - a mix of Scots pine and broadleaf woodland that's been left largely to its own devices - and the light filters through in a way that makes you want to slow down and actually look around.

It's a proper nature reserve, the kind where you come to spot wildlife rather than grab an Instagram shot. Red squirrels, woodland birds, the odd roe deer if you're patient enough. The trails wind through without being over-managed, which means muddy boots are almost guaranteed, but that's half the appeal.

This works well for families who don't need everything signposted and laminated, and for anyone serious about birdwatching or wildlife photography. You'll want at least two hours here, longer if you're the type to sit and listen. Spring and early summer are when it really comes alive - the birds are noisier, the woodland floor is carpeted with life.

From Highland Glen Holiday Park, it's barely a 10-minute drive, making it an easy morning or afternoon slot during a holiday in the area. Aviemore itself is close enough that you can do a proper walk here and still have time for a decent lunch. It's not dramatic or touristy, which is exactly why it's worth the visit.
