Glasdir Copper Mine

The walk up to Glasdir beats the destination itself, if I'm honest. You're climbing through proper Welsh moorland above Dolgellau, and the views back towards Cadair Idris get better with every step. The mine workings themselves - spoil heaps, old stone walls, rusted bits of machinery scattered about - tell you everything you need to know about 19th-century copper extraction without needing interpretation boards or guides.

It's a two to three hour round trip depending on pace and how much time you spend poking around the ruins. The path starts steep but levels off as you gain height. You'll pass old miners' tracks and can trace the veins they were after. Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding; families with young children might struggle with the gradient and loose ground. There's no visitor infrastructure - no café, no car park, no admission fee. It's just a hillside that humans tore into for profit a century and a half ago, now quietly returning to scrub and grass. Go in good weather when the ground's dry. Late spring through early autumn works best.
