Glanton Hill

The walk up Glanton Hill rewards you with proper views across Northumberland's rolling moorland - nothing fancy, just genuine open countryside stretching to the horizon. It's a straightforward climb from the Alnwick area, manageable for most people without being trivial. The summit itself is unremarkable in the way many Northumberland peaks are, but the sense of space up there makes the effort worthwhile.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination for sitting down with a packed lunch for hours - you'll be up and back down in a couple of hours depending on where you start. The real draw is the walk itself rather than what you find at the top. On a clear day the views open up nicely; on a grey day it feels a bit exposed and windswept, so timing matters.

If you're based at River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just over a mile away, Glanton Hill makes a solid morning or afternoon leg-stretch. It fits well into a broader walking itinerary across the Northumberland moors rather than being the whole point of a day out. Free to access, naturally - it's moorland. Allow a couple of hours including the walk up and back down. The challenge is mild enough that older kids won't complain too much, though younger ones might find the open moorland a bit featureless.
