Gib Holme Wood

Gib Holme Wood is a proper working forest just outside Preston, the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning walk far more than a rushed afternoon visit. The woodland here is genuine - dense in places, open in others, with enough established paths to keep you from getting completely lost but rough enough underfoot that you'll feel like you're actually exploring rather than strolling through a manicured park.

It's woodland rather than spectacle. You won't find a visitor centre or marked viewpoints, just trees, birdsong, and the occasional clearing. That's precisely why it works. Walkers and dog owners get the most from it, as do families with kids old enough to enjoy a proper foraging-type adventure without needing facilities every ten minutes. The forest feels lived-in, which is exactly what it is.

Timing is flexible - you can squeeze in an hour, or spend half a day ambling through if you're nearby. Spring and early summer are lovely, though honestly it's decent year-round. Coming here breaks up a caravan holiday nicely if you're based at Dale Hey Farm or Beacon Fell View just down the road. Both are close enough that you could do this as a morning mission and still be back for lunch.

No obvious fees or formal opening hours means you can visit whenever suits. Just treat it with a bit of respect - it's a working forest, not a playground. Bring decent boots.
