Giant's Thumb

A Bronze Age stone circle lurking on the fells above Penrith, Giant's Thumb is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than queue to visit. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards - just you, the stones, and the Cumbrian wind. The circle consists of a handful of upright stones arranged in what was clearly deliberate formation thousands of years ago, though modern walkers often miss it entirely because it doesn't announce itself.

Getting there means a proper walk across moorland, which filters out the casual day-trippers but rewards anyone keen on Bronze Age archaeology or simply wanting to escape the crowds. The views across the fells are considerable, and on clear days you can clock the Lake District mountains to the west. It's the kind of place that makes you wonder who hauled these stones here and why - there's something genuinely moving about standing among them.

Walkers will absolutely love this. History enthusiasts get genuine Bronze Age atmosphere without the gift shop. It's honestly not worth dragging young kids to unless they're already into archaeology - the walk is longer than it sounds and there's nothing to do once you arrive except look at stones.

Free, naturally. Allow two to three hours including the walk from the nearest parking. Spring or autumn work best; summer gets boggy, winter potentially hazardous. If you're basing yourself at Lowther Holiday Park or Crossfells Campsite near Penrith, this makes a cracking morning's expedition before heading to lower-lying attractions. The nearby Eden Valley provides easier family walks if Giant's Thumb proves too remote.
