Giant's Grave (Callann)

You'll find Giant's Grave tucked into the Mid Ulster landscape near Cookstown - a Bronze Age cairn that's been here roughly 4,000 years and shows absolutely no sign of apologising for it. It's the sort of place where you turn up expecting a quick photo stop and end up thinking about what people were doing here when Britain was still mostly forest.

The site itself is fairly stripped back. You're looking at a substantial stone cairn, the kind of thing Bronze Age folk built as a communal tomb, and it sits in open countryside with decent views across the surrounding terrain. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no café - just the stones and your own imagination. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you're after.

History buffs will find it genuinely interesting, particularly if you're already exploring the broader archaeological story of Ulster. It's not a full day's entertainment for families with young kids - they'll get restless after twenty minutes - but walkers heading through the region will appreciate the excuse to stop and the chance to stand where Neolithic communities once gathered.

Getting there from Cookstown takes about fifteen minutes. If you're staying at Sperrinview Glamping nearby, it's a manageable morning jaunt before heading elsewhere. Arrive early or late in the day if you can - the light hits differently, and you'll avoid whatever foot traffic the site gets. Free to visit, obviously. No facilities whatsoever, so bring water.
