Giant Chair!

There's a wooden chair in Castle Douglas that's about fifteen feet tall, and yes, people do actually stop to take photos next to it. The Giant Chair sits as a quirky roadside attraction - the sort of thing that makes you smile rather than spend three hours queuing. It's fundamentally a gallery space wrapped around this oversized bit of furniture, though calling it a gallery might be generous if you're expecting anything too serious.

Families with younger kids will get a kick out of it, especially if they're already in the area. It takes maybe twenty minutes to see properly, longer if you're chatty with whoever's running the place that day. There's something refreshingly unpretentious about it - no app needed, no complicated backstory. Just a big chair and some local art on the walls.

This works best as a quick stop rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Loch Ken Holiday Park, barely a tenth of a mile away, you'd be daft not to wander over. Galloway Glamping is four and a half miles off if you're there instead. Both parks offer proper Lowlands scenery, so combining a night or two with a visit to the chair makes for a decent micro-adventure.

The whole thing's free, as far as I can tell. Just turn up when you're passing through Castle Douglas. Don't expect anything complicated - sometimes the best bits of a Scottish holiday are the ones that make you laugh a little.
