Ger Tor

The granite outcrop rises abruptly from Dartmoor's moorland about three miles south of Okehampton, and it's worth the trudge. Ger Tor isn't particularly high - around 1,750 feet - but the climb from the valley floor is steep enough to earn the views properly. The summit consists of three distinct tors, the largest crowned with jumbled boulders that look like they've been carelessly stacked by giants. On a clear day, you can see right across Devon toward Exmoor.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll - allow two to three hours from the car park near the old Ger Farm ruins - but it rewards proper effort. The moorland path meanders through heather and gorse before climbing steeply, and the final scramble over those granite blocks requires a bit of hand use. Kids aged eight and up will manage it fine if they're used to walking; younger ones might find the loose stone tedious.

There's no visitor centre or facilities up top, just the wind and the view. Bring water and weather-appropriate kit - Dartmoor changes mood quickly. Summer is most reliable, though spring offers better solitude.

The nearby Langstone Manor offers glamping if you want something less rustic. Both parks position you nicely for exploring the wider moor without constant driving.
