The cannon itself is modest, weathered, and honestly a bit underwhelming if you're expecting something grand. But if you care about how we got from dodgy approximations to proper ordinance survey work, it's absolutely worth stopping by.

The spot works best for history enthusiasts rather than families looking for a full afternoon out - you'll spend twenty minutes here, maybe half an hour if you're really into it. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards to speak of, which means doing a bit of homework beforehand helps. It's free, obviously. The area around Staines is flat and fairly built-up, so don't expect moorland views or anything like that.

If you're basing yourself at Penton Park or Laleham Camping Club, both within five miles, this is a reasonable detour on a local walk. Pair it with a riverside stroll along the Thames - Staines has proper riverside walks that are far more engaging than the cannon alone. Go early morning if you want photos without cars in the background. Bit anticlimactic as stand-alone attractions go, but it's a solid footnote to a park holiday if you're into British history.
