Gelli-gason

Proper hiking boots are essential for this 545-metre summit just southwest of Welshpool. Gelli-gason might not be Wales' most famous peak, but it rewards the effort with sweeping views across the Severn Valley and into Shropshire's rolling countryside. The climb is steady rather than brutal, though you'll definitely feel it in your legs by the time you reach the top.

Walkers and serious ramblers will get the most satisfaction here - this isn't really one for casual day-trippers or families with young children. The paths can be muddy and indistinct in places, so decent navigation skills come in handy. Allow three to four hours for a proper circular walk, depending on your route and how long you spend admiring the panorama.

From the summit, Welshpool spreads out below like a detailed map, with Powis Castle visible on its wooded hill. On clear days, you can trace the Severn's meandering course and pick out landmarks deep into England. The peak works brilliantly as part of a longer walking holiday based at one of the nearby glamping spots like The Secret Yurts or Brook Valley Glamping. Most visitors combine it with other local hills or a trip to Montgomery for a proper day out in this quietly beautiful corner of Mid Wales.
