The woodland paths at Stanage Park wind through proper old-growth forest just outside Welshpool, and you'll spend most of your time either spotting birds or simply listening to the quiet. It's a nature reserve, so the main draw is walking - there's no amusement park energy here, no viewing platforms or visitor centre. Just trees, streams, and the occasional deer if you're lucky and move quietly enough.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths are manageable but muddy after rain, and you'll want at least 90 minutes to do it justice without rushing. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after the first half hour, though there's something oddly compelling about proper woodland if you let yourself slow down. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - the reserve has good woodland species. It's free to access, which helps when the weather's iffy and you're not sure it'll be worth it.

Stanage pairs well with the glamping options scattered within a couple of miles - The Secret Yurts and Brook Valley are close enough that you could do a morning walk and be back for lunch. It's also sensible base-hopping country if you're splitting your time between here, Powis Castle, and the Welshpool railway. Don't expect Instagram moments. Do expect to remember why you came to Mid Wales in the first place.
