Geevor Tin Mine Museum

You descend into blackness carrying a torch, following the metal rails deeper underground. Geevor isn't some polished museum experience - it's the real deal, an actual working tin mine that closed in 1990, now opened up so you can walk where miners spent their entire lives extracting ore from the Cornish bedrock. The shafts, the machinery, the claustrophobic tunnels - it's genuinely sobering stuff.

The museum sits near Penzance on the far reaches of West Cornwall, and it's heavy on industrial heritage rather than twee tourist theatre. You'll see the original engine house, the stamps that crushed the tin, and if you're brave enough, you can go below ground on a guided tour through the 18th-century workings. The underground sections are cold, cramped, and absolutely mesmerising. It's not somewhere to rush - allow a good three hours minimum if you're doing the full experience.
