The forest at Gashouse Plantation offers a proper escape from York's medieval streets without requiring a long drive. It's woodland walking country, the kind of place where you can disappear into the trees for an hour or two and genuinely feel like you've left the city behind. The plantation itself is a working forest rather than a manicured country estate - you'll find yourself on good paths through mature conifers and mixed woodland, with the occasional clearing that breaks up the canopy nicely.

This works best for walkers who enjoy a straightforward woodland ramble without faffing about looking for viewpoints or heritage plaques. Children will manage it fine if they've got decent energy levels, though it won't offer the drama of, say, a proper moorland walk.
